SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Utah right-handed pitcher Katie Donovan has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, according to a release from the league office on Monday.
Donovan went 2-0 and collected one save in three starts and a total of six appearances this past week. In Utah's first game at the Mary Nutter Classic last Friday, Donovan threw the program's first no-hitter since 2012 guided the Utes to an 11-0 victory over Nevada. Just a few hours later she converted a three-inning-save, while combining with fellow freshman Miranda Viramontes in a shutout against UC Santa Barbara. It was Donovan's second save of the season, which marks the most saves for a Utah player since 2008.
The Salem, Ore., native then turned around the next to day to pitch a complete-game in Utah's win over No. 10 Tennessee, earning the victory after yielding just three runs to a squad that was averaging more than eight runs-per-game this season.
For the entire week, Donovan gave up just 10 runs on 15 hits and struck out 21 batters in her 24.1 innings of work. Opposing hitters batted just .175 against her this past week and she tallied a WHIP (walks+hits/innings pitched) of 1.07
Donovan becomes the first Utah player to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors and she is the fourth player overall to earn conference weekly honors.
