On what happened in the Oregon game:
We had 11 turnovers and made some bad passes. We had sloppy possessions and were not crisp. We need to be better on the road. We had only three turnovers in the second half and couldn't make open shots or shots around the rim. At halftime we said 'let's just get back to the drawing board.' We saw a lot of zone and the week before was a lot of man defense. We anticipate seeing man defense this weekend. We need to play harder. You get lost in playing hard defensively and we didn't do that on offense. Three things stood out on the clips at the end of possessions. One was 50/50 balls. There were eight of them, we got two and they scored 10 points off the other six. It's deflating and the pace was something different with their type of athletes. We missed four charges that we need to take. Guys were getting dunked on and we randomly did some things we don't do. That happens in the course of a game. They hit a 3 off an inbounds in a 4-point game, can't happen. We lose by 11 but it didn't look that bad until the end.
On the play of the Utah post players:
There's not a simple answer. We watched plenty of clips against Oregon and OSU and we aren't feeding them. When we do get them the ball, they're soft. We had three turnovers on double teams, about six soft finishes. We were avoiding contact and not dunking or finishing the and-1 chances. if I'm a guard, I'm not throwing it down there and if I'm a big I'm wondering why I'm not getting the ball. It's on both groups of guys.
On perceiving ASU as a trap game:
We aren't concerned with them being a trap game. Nothing has changed with our approach and that may be the story for you, the media, but our coaches and players aren't wired that way. We won't discuss Arizona until Thursday after the game. That's our mindset.
On the team's mindset:
I don't think our emotional state is dependent on the split. It's based off losing this last game. Our goal was to complete the mission and get two road wins. The other team played harder and more inspired. We need to have more attention to detail and I told our guys to be ready for ugly video and big boy conversations. We have our team's attention and our practices have been really good. I've been saying it all season that you won't know our record by our approach every day. It's human nature to be humbled after losses. You try and practice and prepare like you lost the last game. We want everyone to stay hungry. That's the great thing about sports. We can get the taste out of our mouth.
On ASU:
They're getting great performances from guys. It's not one guy but different people have stepped up. Their rotation seems clearer. They have 7-8 guys playing now and almost six in double figures. They've won four of their last five and their guys are shooting the ball well on the perimeter. They're also getting great play through their pick-and-roll.
On Senior Night:
Senior Night is Saturday. I don't want to get caught up in it. Our crowds have been solid all year and everything goes quickly. We have two games at home, two on the road and then Las Vegas it's amazing how quickly the year goes.
On grinding through the end of the year:
February is hard. You get to the end and it's the time of year where there shouldn't be a lot of thinking going on. There shouldn’t be any pity parties. You don't want to have any regrets. Case in point, against Oregon we are turning the ball over and the game is tied and we can't talk about stuff like playing harder. We have a chance to do something memorable and let's not complicate it. The players have to be asking themselves 'what am I doing to help our team?' I'm not worried about feelings. What are you bringing to the table? Who is going to get 50/50 ball? Who's going to make a big play and step up to take a shot? We don't need to have coaches-only meetings or player meetings. It's that time of year where you get on edge and stay cranky. It's not a time for talk but one for action.
On telling his team to attack the basket:
I think you have to be careful with our guys. They're pretty literal. When you tell them to drive, it's all they do. Dakarai is getting better at picking his spots I'm not telling Kenneth to drive because he will drive every time. I tell guys to drive and then we don't throw to the post. I want players who if they have a shot, shoot. If you have a lane, drive. It's not time to throw away our plan. We will simplify things and do what we do.
On needing more production from the freshmen:
Everyone needs to do more, not just our freshmen. We have had good performances and bad performances. We need three, four, five guys playing well, not one or two, at this time of year. I'm not going to address anyone in particular. Our guys have to quit thinking about it. I don't need to have a heart-to-heart with you. You need to know what you need to do. This is a marathon. It's survival. You need to finish strong. The person evaluating things in a marathon is going to fall on their face. We have limited time, so how much better are you going to be at shooting or driving or whatever.
