SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team travels to Louisiana for a four-game series against Nicholls State, beginning on Friday, Feb. 27, against 6:00 p.m. CT. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28, beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT and close out the weekend on Sunday, March 1, at 1:00 p.m. CT.
The Utes are continuing to find their roles as the team moves through its early-season schedule.
"We have another four games to get our new players adjusted to Division I baseball, and we will continue to work on our strengths and weaknesses," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I think our roles are starting to take shape on our team - getting a right and left handed lineup and getting our pitching roles settled. I think our pitching is coming together a little bit. We had four quality starts last weekend and we had some quality relief appearances by some guys. I'm hoping that over the next two weeks that we will shore things up and solidify those roles going into the Arizona series.
Although the Utes have not gotten the results on the field they have hoped for so far, four of their losses have come by two runs or less.
"In college baseball today with the league that we play in and the opponents that we play, the team that makes the first or last mistake is usually the team that comes out behind," Kinneberg said. "The little things that add up to big things, and that's what's happening to us a little bit. A base running error, or not executing an offensive play or not getting a bunt down or making a physical error late in a ballgame can ultimately turn the tide for you. Those are the little things that we have to do to get over the hump and win those close games. We're going to be in every game with our pitching and our defense, and with the way that college baseball is and we have to learn at the end of the game to win it and to make that play."
Nicholls State is 4-2-1 this season, which includes a win over fourth-ranked LSU.
