SALT LAKE CITY - The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has released its 2014-15 Men's All-District Teams, based on voting from its national membership, and Delon Wright has been named District VIII Player of the Year.
Wright becomes the third Utah player to be named District Player of the Year joining Luke Nevill (Âą09) and Andrew Bogut (Âą05). Nevill was the last two-time all-district selection but Wright is the first Ute to attain honors in consecutive seasons. The last Utah player to be named to an all-district team other than Wright was Will Clyburn (Âą11).
Wright is one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy Award given to the nation's top point guard. He is also a finalist for the John Wooden Award and James Naismith Award, both given to the nation's top player.
Wright curently needs 14 steals to catch Pace Mannion for third all-time at Utah despite only playing two seasons. This year he ranks second in the Pac-12 in steals, 17th nationally, as well as assist-to-turnover ratio and free-throw percentage. Wright sits third in the league in assists, 34th nationally, and seventh in field-goal percentage. The senior also ranks among one of the league leaders in blocks (11th) and scoring (12th).
For each of the nine geographic districts, ten players are selected (11 in the case of ties) as well as a player and coach of the year. Four schools ¬ Gonzaga (Kyle Wiltjer and Mark Few), Kentucky (Willie Cauley-Stein and John Calipari), Northern Iowa (Seth Tuttle and Ben Jacobson) and Wisconsin (Frank Kaminsky and Bo Ryan) ¬ can boast the honor of having the district player and coach of the year. Villanova's Jay Wright (District II) and Tony Bennett (District III) have earned back-to-back District Coach of the Year honors.
