SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team travels to Los Angeles to face seventh-ranked UCLA with the three-game series beginning on Friday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. PT. The series continues on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. PT and Sunday, March 22, at 1:00 p.m. PT.
The Utes (7-12, 2-1 Pac-12) have won five of their last six games, winning back-to-back series in their Pac-12 opener against Arizona and against Big 12 opponent Kansas. The Utes rallied from seven runs down to win the third game of the series against the Wildcats.
Utah is coming off a 9-3 win over Utah Valley on Tuesday. Dylan Drachler, Nolan Stouder and Tanner Thomas combined for 13 strikeouts on the mound, while Wyler Smith went 3-for-5 at the plate.
"We're getting positive results at the end of the game, and that's encouraging," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I would still like to see us play a little cleaner and make fewer mental mistakes both on offense, defense and in pitching. When playing teams in our conference, those are the mistakes that hurt you in those close games. In this league you have to play really solid fundamental baseball to be in games, so I am looking for us to continue to improve on every pitch and make sure we're focused and ready for whatever play may come."
Smith ranks sixth in the Pac-12 in batting average (.418) and is tied for ninth in the conference in on-base percentage (.480). Cody Scaggari leads the league in toughest hitters to strike out, while Dallas Carroll is second in the category.
UCLA (14-5, 2-1 Pac-12), is ranked as high as seventh in the nation by the NCBWA. The Bruins are coming off a 2-1 series win over Washington, needing 13 innings to take down the Huskies in game three of the series. UCLA has a tremendous pitching staff, with a 2.75 ERA (second in the league). Hurlers James Kaprielian and David Berg are both on the Golden Spikes Award watch list.
