SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team travels to the midwest for a three-game series against Big 12 opponent Kansas.
The Utes and Jayhawks open their three-game series on Friday, March 6, at 3:00 p.m. CT. The series continues on Saturday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m. CT and Sunday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m. CT.
The games will be shown on ESPN3.
Utah and Kansas faced each other earlier this season at the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge, with the Jayhawks taking an early 4-0 lead en route to a 6-3 win. Cody Scaggari hit a two-run home run for the Utes, and Utah struggled with runners stranded on base, leaving nine on throughout the game.
Utah has struggled with close games this year. Of the Utes 10 losses, six have been by one or two runs.
"We're just not closing on the offensive side," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We're not converting opportunities. We're getting runners on base and in scoring position, and we're not getting that key hit yet and not making the most of our opportunities. On the pitching and defensive side we are doing fine and playing pretty well, but we have to get more production on offense and figure that side of the game out. We've got a few more days of practice before we play again, and we'll take every opportunity to get our swings better and work on our fundamentals and apply them to the games."
Utah has several pitchers ranked in the Pac-12 standings. Bret Helton's 1.86 ERA is ninth in the conference while Jayson Rose is holding opponents to a .167 ERA, which is sixth in the Pac-12.
Kansas is 4-7 this year and recently won games against Chicago State and Northeastern at the Snowbird Classic. KU has a midweek two-game series against Grand Canyon before taking on the Utes during the weekend.
