UTES TAKE FIRST-EVER PAC-12 ROAD SERIES
Utah won its first-ever Pac-12 Conference series away from Salt Lake City this past weekend, earning a pair of wins and dropping just one against the Stanford Cardinal in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Utes won game won of the series 6-3 behind a complete-game victory from freshman Miranda Viramontes (Chino, Calif.), who gave up just three runs on seven hits and struck out four. Senior Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) tied a career-high as she collected three hits in her four at bats, including a double with one RBI and one run scored. Kristen Stewart (Covina, Calif.) recorded a pair of base knocks and scored two runs in the win, as well.
Stanford took game two of the series, 4-2, scoring a run in the second inning and then putting up a three-spot in the fourth inning. Utah finally got on the board in the fourth inning with a RBI-double from Heather Bowen (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Hannah Flippen later tried to start a rally with her lead off home run in the top of the seventh inning, but the Cardinal managed to get three-straight ground outs to end the inning and pick up the win. Katie Donovan (Salem, Ore.) took the loss for the Utes, giving up the four runs on just four hits and striking out seven in her six full innings of work.
Utah won the rubber-match between the two teams on Sunday, taking the contest 7-2. The Utes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and later added to that lead with a RBI-single from Kate Dickman (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Utah later put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth inning and both Viramontes and Donovan did the rest in the circle for the Utes. Both players combined to give up just a pair of runs on four hits with Viramontes earning the win - her ninth of the season - and Donovan recording her third save of the year.
VIRAMONTES TABBED PAC-12 FRESHMAN POW
Miranda Viramontes earned her first-ever Pac-12 weekly honor on Monday, as she was named this week's Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Viramontes went 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA against Stanford this past weekend. Her two wins helped lead Utah to its first Pac-12 series win on the road in school history. She registered one complete-game victory and tallied nine strikeouts in her 11.0 innings of work on the weekend.
UTES AMONG TOP-35 IN RPI RANKINGS
Utah came in at No. 31 in last week's initial RPI rankings release and remained inside the RPI top-35 this week, coming in at No. 34.
Utah is one of eight Pac-12 teams ranked inside the RPI's top-40 teams, with Oregon leading the way at No. 7 and Oregon State rounding out the Pac-12 teams at No. 38. Stanford is the only team outside of the top-50, coming in at No. 78 this week.
The Utes, who are 22-13 overall this season, have played six top-50 RPI teams and a total of 15 teams ranked inside the RPI top-100. Utah is 2-8 against top-50 teams and combined 14-12 overall among all teams ranked inside the top-100.
Utah is 6-1 against teams ranked outside the RPI top-100, with its only loss coming to No. 159 East Carolina.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS
Southern Utah comes into Tuesday's doubleheader having dropped three-straight to Idaho State this past weekend. The Thunderbirds were outscored 29-6 during the three-game set.
SUU has lost four of its past five games, with its last win coming last Wednesday, March 25 against Dixie State in Cedar City. The win over Dixie State snapped the Red Storm's 23-game winning streak.
The Thunderbirds are 4-4 in true road games this season and 7-11 overall in contests away from Cedar City - neutral site games included.
Sara Park leads the Thunderbird offense with a .347 batting average. She has three doubles and a pair of triples to go along with four runs batted in. Kylee Wolf is hitting .320 on the season and she leads her team with 10 doubles, one home run and 10 RBI.
Katie Greenberg leads SUU in the circle with a 5-9 record and a 8.50 earned run average. She has four complete games and combined with Hannah Wynn on a shutout earlier this season. Greenberg leads SUU with 29 K's on the year.
SERIES HISTORY
Utah leads the all-time series 53-4, which includes a 13-2 record under current head coach Amy Hogue.
The Thunderbirds currently have a one-game winning streak against Utah after splitting a doubleheader against the Utes in Salt Lake City last season.
Utah won the first game 12-4 in a five inning run-rule and then fell 14-10 in game two. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak over the Thunderbirds that dated back to 2009.
MENDENHALL GOES OFF ON THE FARM
Senior Marissa Mendenhall had herself a great weekend at Stanford this past weekend, collecting seven hits in her 11 at bats for a .636 batting average against the Cardinal. Mendenhall tied a career-high with three base hits in Friday's win and then tallied a pair of hits in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. She recorded two doubles, drove in three runs on the weekend and scored a run, as well.
UTES GET THE BATS GOING ON THE ROAD
Utah entered this past weekend's Pac-12 Conference series with Stanford, hitting just .170 as a team against conference foes. By the time the weekend was over, Utah pushed its batting average up .061 points to .231. The Utes more than doubled its hits total, collecting 29 hits this past weekend after recording just 25 hits in the first six conference games.
Marissa Mendenhall, who went 7-for-11 in the series, raised her batting average from .268 to .317 overall. She was not th only player to do that, as freshman Heather Bowen pushed her batting average from .189 to .233 and sophomore Bridget Castro (Bellflower, Calif.) added .025 points to her average, increasing it from .223 to .248.
DICKMAN NEARS FOUR HITS
Senior Kate Dickman collected three-straight hits in her first three at bats against Stanford on Sunday and was about two-three feet away from getting her fourth hit of the day before Stanford's Bessie Noll made a play on the ball to rob her of a hit.
Dickman belted the ball to deep right field and what looked like to be a home run off the bat, turned into a great defensive play by Noll, who jumped up to snag the ball out of the air for an out. It was Dickman's only out at the plate as she finished the game going 3-for-4 - her second three-hit game of the season - with three singles, a run batted in and two runs scored.
CASTRO BREAKS OUT OF RBI-SLUMP
Sophomore Bridget Castro snapped out of a 10-game RBI slump this weekend as she drove in a run in both Friday and Sunday's games at Stanford.
Castro, who leads the team with 24 RBI heading into the week, had been stuck at 22 RBI since driving in a pair of runs against Hawaii back on March 7. Prior to driving in a run in her first at bat on Friday, Castro had been to the plate 30 times without recording a RBI.
Although she did not record a RBI in Saturday's game, Castro did manage to drive in a run in Sunday's victory - a RBI-double down the right field line in the top of the fourth inning against the Cardinal.
PITCHING RANKS AMONG NATION'S BEST
The Utah pitching staff continues to boast one of the best earned run averages in both the Pac-12 and the nation. The Ute pitching staff heads into the week with a combined 2.75 ERA, which ranks third-best in the Pac-12 and 46th overall in the nation.
Katie Donovan has a 2.68 ERA, which ranks seventh in the Pac-12, and Miranda Viramontes' 2.82 ERA currently ranks tenth in the league.
DICKMAN WITH THE WHEELS
Kate Dickman leads Utah with eight steals on the season, which includes a perfect 5-for-5 efficiency in stolen bases in Pac-12-only games. Her five stolen bases in Pac-12 games ranks second to only Oregon's Janie Takeda, who is a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts against conference foes.
