SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team begins Pac-12 play at Arizona on Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. MST/PT. The Utes and Wildcats continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. MST/PT and Sunday, March 15, at 12:00 p.m. MST/PT.
"The grind is here now," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said about starting Pac-12 play. "We have 10 weekends of really great baseball ahead of us and great teams we are going to play. Hopefully our first four weekends have prepared us in getting our roles down, getting our new players feet wet, establishing a lineup and establishing our pitching staff and the roles they are going to be in. Now it's time - we'll have to step up and really play our best baseball each and every day to compete in this league."
Utah is coming off its first series win of the season, taking two of three games from Big 12 opponent Kansas.
"As a coaching staff, we thought it was very important to get our roles down by the time we started conference play," Kinneberg said. "Our pitching has really improved. Moving Dalton Carroll into the starting rotation has been a benefit to us. The emergence of Hunter Rodriguez as our closer has been big as well. Offensively, I thought this weekend and last weekend we barreled up more baseballs than we have in the past. I think our offense is starting to click, but it needs to get better. We're going to see really good pitching in the conference, and hopefully our offense is prepared after our first four weekends."
Arizona is 15-4 this season. The Wildcats are currently on a six-game winning streak with series sweeps over New Mexico State and Portland. Arizona leads the Pac-12 with a .339 batting average.
"You always think about great offenses when you think about Arizona," Kinneberg said. "They have 3-4 really quality hitters in the lineup with some speed, so it's going to be a challenge for our pitching staff. We'll have to play our game and make sure our pitching staff does a good job of limiting their opportunities, and make sure our offense takes advantage of the opportunities that arise for us."
Kinneberg is a 1980 graduate of Arizona. Utah pitching coach Mike Crawford also graduated from Arizona (2000).
