HOW SWEEP IT IS
The Utes are coming off a three-game sweep over Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., this past weekend, becoming the first Utah team to sweep a Pac-12 foe on the road since joining the league in 2012.
Utah took game one, 6-0, behind Katie Donovan's one-hitter over six innings, while Shelby Pacheco and Heather Bowen provided a spark for the Utes offensively, as both players homered in the game. Anissa Urtez and Bridget Castro led the team with two hits each, as well.
Utah held onto a 7-5 win over the Beavers on Saturday, outscoring the home squad 4-3 in the final inning of play to go up 2-0 in the series. Miranda Viramontes gave up just one run to earn the win in the circle, while Donovan notched her fifth save of the season. Bowen was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and she homered for the second-straight game.
Donovan got the nod for the Utes in game three and all she did was give up two runs on four hits while striking out seven in a 6-2 Utah win. Five different Utah players tallied two hits and Castro led the squad with a pair of RBI.
GET OUT YOUR BROOM STICKS
This past weekend's sweep was Utah's first against a conference foe on the road, but it was Utah's second three-game sweep on the road in 2015 after the Utes earned a sweep over McNeese State back on Mar. 17-18. It marks Utah's fourth sweep overall the past two seasons as the Utes also swept both Cal and Grand Canyon in Salt Lake City last season.
BOWEN TAKES HOME PAC-12 WEEKLY HONOR
Heather Bowen was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Monday, becoming the third-straight Utah player to earn weekly accolades from the conference office. Miranda Viramontes was the Freshman of the Week back on Mar. 30 and Hannah Flippen was named Player of Week by the Pac-12 just last week.
Bowen hit .500 on the weekend and cranked a pair of home runs to record a team-high 1.100 slugging percentage, as well. She scored four runs and drove in five RBI, while also stealing two bases.
The Utes have tallied a school-record four Pac-12 weekly honors this season. Donovan was also tabbed freshman of the week back on Feb. 23.
PAC-12 TURNAROUND
Since going 0-3 to both UCLA and Oregon to drop its first six conference games, Utah has won seven of its previous nine Pac-12 games and has moved into sole possession of fifth-place in the conference race.
For the first time in school history, Utah has won three-consecutive Pac-12 series after downing Stanford and Cal, 2-1, to go along with the 3-0 sweep over Oregon State.
Utah is currently just a half game back of Washington (7-7) for fourth-place, while Arizona (8-4) brings in a two and a half game lead over the Utes into the weekend series. Heading into the weekend, the Utes and Arizona State (5-6) are in a virtual tie, with Utah leading only by percentage points. Utah is one and a half games ahead of Cal (5-7).
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Arizona is coming off a 2-1 series win over Washington in Tucson this past weekend. The Wildcats have won six of its last seven and 10 of its previous 13 contests.
Kellie Fox leads UA with a .424 batting average and is tied for the team lead with Hallie Wilson with 56 hits on the season. Michelle Floyd leads UA in the circle with 17 wins and a 3.07 ERA. She has registered 10 complete games and has 105 K's in 134.2 innings of work.
The Wildcats head into this weekend's series leading the Pac-12 in batting average (.373), slugging percentage (.621) and hits (437), while ranking second in runs scored (354). Arizona has a combined 3.75 ERA in the circle.
SERIES HISTORY
Arizona leads 29-7 in the all-time series that dates back to the 1983 season. The Wildcats have taken three-straight from the Utes, with Utah's last win coming back on Mar. 30, 2013.
This weekend marks just the second time that the Wildcats have played a three-game series in Salt Lake City, with UA taking the series 2-1 against the Utes back in 2013. Despite Utah losing the series, the Utes outscored the Wildcats 17-16 over the three-game set.
OFFENSE GETS ON A ROLL
Utah opened its first six games of Pac-12 play hitting just .170 as a team with 25 hits, 13 runs, five doubles, no triples and just two home runs.
Over the past nine league games, Utah has tallied a .352 batting average and a .509 slugging percentage, while collecting 94 hits, 54 runs, 17 doubles, a pair of triples and seven home runs.
Utah heads into this weekend batting a combined .287 in conference play with 119 hits, 67 runs, 22 doubles and nine home runs. The Utes have now pushed its slugging percentage up to .415 and its on-base percentage to .340 over the first 15 Pac-12 games.
UTAH UP TO NO. 32 IN RPI RANKINGS
For the fourth-straight week, Utah remained inside the top-35 RPI rankings, coming in at No. 32 this week. The Utes have ranked inside the top-35 all four weeks, with its best ranking coming in at No. 31 back on Mar. 23. Utah moved up three spots this week after coming in at No. 35 last week.
UTAH VS. RPI-RANKED TEAMS
The Utes head into this weekend with a combined 6-10 record against top-50 RPI ranked teams. Utah is 14-3 overall against teams ranked from No. 51-100 and 9-1 against teams that are ranked outside of the RPI top-100.
CASTRO KEEPS CRANKING OUT HITS
Sophomore Bridget Castro added to her career-long hitting streak this past weekend, collecting a hit in all three games to push her hitting streak to 11-consecutive contests.
Over the past 11 games, Castro is hitting .450 with 18 hits that have gone for five doubles and she has drove in 12 runs during that span, as well.
HITTING STREAKS
Along with Castro's current 11-game hitting streak, Utah has had three players tally hitting streaks of 10-games or more. It marks the first time since 2011 (four players) that at least players have recorded hitting streaks of 10 games or more.
Senior Kate Dickman recorded a 19-game hitting streak earlier in the season and sophomore Hannah Flippen tallied a 15-game hitting streak, which came to an end just this past weekend.
DONOVAN NEARING SAVES RECORD
Freshman Katie Donovan became the first Utah player to record five saves in a season since Carolyn Gran set the school record with six saves back in 1986. Donovan is now just one save shy of tying that school record and with two more saves, she would become the all-time leader.
GOING YARD
Each of Utah's primary starters in the batting order have at least one home run on the season. Senior Kate Dickman leads the team with six home runs, while sophomore Hannah Flippen follows with five. Sophomore Bridget Castro has blasted four home runs on th season, while senior Marissa Mendenhall, junior Kristen Stewart and freshman Heather Bowen have three round-trippers on the year. The remaining starters to hit home runs this season include: junior Shelby Pacheco (2), Maddy Woodard (1) and Anissa Urtez (1).
