The Utes (10-19, 4-8 Pac-12) are coming off a competitive weekend against sixth-ranked Arizona State. Utah went 1-2 and had a chance to win all three games, pushing the two losses into extra innings.
"We have to move forward after a really grueling weekend," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We've worked hard all year on the mental side of the game. `Next pitch' is what we call it, and that's something we have to do this weekend. We played great against a very good team, and only won one of those games when we had chances to win all three, so it's going to be a big job to rebound and get ready for a very good Southeastern Louisiana team that comes in this weekend. They were in the regionals last year and it looks like they will be a regional team again this year. We've made progress in a lot of areas and played very well, but we have to take it to the next level and play better this weekend."
Southeastern Louisiana is 24-9 on the year and is at the top of the Southland Conference standings with an 11-4 record. The Lions have a midweek game against South Alabama before making the trek to Salt Lake City.
The Utes rank second in the Pac-12 with 45 stolen bases this year.
"Coach [Jason] Hawkins and Coach [Jay] Brossman have really worked hard on the base running aspect with our position players. That's something that we have to be very good at in order to produce runs, and that's one of the ways that our offense works. We have some speed at the top end of our lineup and we have to utilize that in any way we can to advance runners and get them into scoring position. Our philosophy is to put the pressure on, and with our personnel that fits us the best at this point."
