ON DECK
The No. 23 Utah Utes (34-17) will make its 13th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament this Friday, May 15, taking on Virginia Tech (34-21) in the first round of the Knoxville Regional. Utah is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and Va Tech is the No. 3 seed.
First pitch between the Utes and Hokies is set for 3:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. MT on Friday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
A win over the Hokies would put the Utes into the second round to face the winner of #10/9 Tennessee and Longwood, which would be played Saturday, May 16 at 1 p.m. ET/11 a.m. MT. A loss on Friday would put the Utes in an elimination game against the loser between the Lady Vols and Lancers, with that game scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m./1:30 p.m. MT.
The winner of the double-elimination Regional from Knoxville will earn a trip to the Super Regionals round next week, May 21-24.
COVERING THE UTES
All three days of the Knoxville Regional will be streamed live on ESPN3.com and SEC Network +. Sam Gore will call the play-by-play, while Amanda Freed offers color commentary for the entire tournament.
Both web streams can be viewed through the WatchESPN app on smartphones, computers, and tablets.

UTAH NOTES
• Utah finished the regular season with a 34-17 overall record and placed fourth in Pac-12 with after going 12-11 in league play.
• The 34 regular-season wins are the most since Utah tallied 35 victories in 2006 and the 12 Pac-12 wins are the most since joining the league in 2012.
• Utah won five consecutive Pac-12 series before tying with Washington (1-1) after the series finale was cancelled due to rain last Saturday.
• The Utes finished the season in conference play, ranked sixth in the league in batting (.300), third in pitching (3.86 ERA) and second in fielding (.971).
• Against Pac-12 teams, Senior Kate Dickman ranked third in the league in hitting (.481), 10th in slugging percentage (.831), 8th in on-base percentage (.523), first in hits (37), first in doubles (9) and fourth in total bases (64).
• In Pac-12 play, freshman Katie Donovan finished fourth in ERA (3.75), while fellow freshman Miranda Viramontess ranked fifth (3.87). Donovan ranked third in strikeouts (69) and Viramontes finished ninth (34).
UTAH IN THE NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Utah softball team is making its 13th overall appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament and first since 2006.
The Utes are 16-27 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which includes a 15-21 mark at regional sites and a record of 1-6 in the NCAA Women's College World Series. Utah went 2-2 in the Austin Regional back in 2006.
UTAH AGAINST THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
Utah is 3-0 this season against teams in the Knoxville Regional. The Utes defeated then No. 10-ranked Tennessee, 4-3 at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and then just a few weeks later the Utes posted back-to-back wins against Longwood at the Hawaii Spring Fling, defeating the Lancers 10-1 and 3-2.
It was the first-ever meetings against both Tennessee and Longwood earlier this season and Friday's contest against Virginia Tech will be the first meeting between the two programs, as well.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
- Virginia Tech
The Hokies went 34-21 overall and finished seventh in the ACC with a record of 9-14. Va Tech is coming off a 3-2 loss to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament and snapped a seven-game losing skid after defeating Boston College, 9-2, in the regular-season finale.
The Hokies are led offensively by Breanna Davenport, who is hitting .338 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 23 RBI. Kelsey Mericka (.272) led the squad with 16 home runs and ranked second with 43 RBI on the year.
Maggie Tyler leads Va Tech in the circle, having posted a 15-12 record and a 3.20 ERA. Kelly Heinz (12-6) led the pitching staff with a 2.47 ERA on the season.
- Tennessee
The Lady Vols posted an overall record of 42-14 and finished tied for fourth-place in the SEC with a record of 15-9. The Lady Vols went 3-1 in the SEC Tournament, falling 6-5 in nine innings to Auburn in the conference championship game. The Lady Vols have gone 13-3 since April 12.
Annie Aldrete leads the team with a .336 batting average and has team-highs in home runs (15) and RBI (45).
Erin Gabriel posted a record of 15-6 with an ERA of 2.86 in the circle for the Lady Vols. Rainey Gaffin (14-3) led the way with a 2.45 ERA on the season.
- Longwood
The Lancers earned its second trip in three seasons to the NCAA Regional Tournament after going 4-0 in the Big South Conference Tournament and winning the league championship with a 4-0 victory against Presbyterian College last Sunday. The Lancers head into the tournament having won 10-straight games dating back to April 16.
Longwood is led offensively by Megan Baltzell, who is batting .422 on the season with 12 doubles, ranks second in the nation with 27 home runs and seventh in the nation with 72 RBI.
Elizabeth McCarthy is the primary pitcher for the Lancers and she has tallied a 22-12 record with a 3.40 ERA.
UTES NO. 23 IN LATEST ESPN POLL
Utah earned a top-25 ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll for a third straight week and will head into the postseason ranked No. 23, according to the USA Softball website.
The Utes cracked the ESPN.com Poll for the first time in school history back on Apr. 28, checking in at No. 24. Utah was No. 22 in the poll last week.
UTES AGAINST TOP-RANKED TEAMS
The Utes are 8-13 against top 25-ranked teams this season, but have won sevn of the last 10 against those top-ranked teams.
DICKMAN EARNS PAC-12 WEEKLY HONOR
Kate Dickman was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Monday after posting a .875 batting average with two doubles and a home run in two games against Washington last weekend.
Dickman, who earns Pac-12 weekly accolades for the first time this season and in her career, became the second Ute player to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week (Hannah Flippen: Apr. 6, Apr. 20) and fifth player overall to earn a conference weekly honor this season.
UTES ON A ROLL HEADING INTO POSTSEASON
The Utes have won 14 of its last 19 ballgames dating back to its series at Stanford (Mar. 27).
During that stretch, Utah has combined to hit .349 as a team with 45 doubles, five triples and 51 RBI, while the pitching staff has tallied a 2.77 ERA.
Kate Dickman has led the way offensively, batting .507 over the last 19 games with 11 doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI, while Hannah Flippen follows batting .452 with six doubles and four home runs.
Katie Donovan has gone 8-4 with a 2.48 ERA and collected four saves for the Utes, as well. Miranda Viramontes is 4-0 with a 3.55 ERA.
ROAD WARRIORS
Utah recorded its best record away from home since joining the Pac-12, going 13-7 in road contests and 14-4 in neutral-site games this season.
The 13 wins in true road games are the most for Utah since collecting 17 road victories in 2007, while the combined 27 wins away from home are the most since recording 29 victories in 2000.
Utah tallied a .710 winning percentage in games away from home this season, which ranks as the team's best since going 39-6 (.866) away from home more than 21 years ago back in 1994.
