SALT LAKE CITY - Utah baseball travels south for a midweek game at Utah Valley on Tuesday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
Tuesday's game marks the second game this season between the Utes and Wolverines. Utah won the first game Salt Lake City, back on March 17, 9-3. Dylan Drachler, Nolan Stouder and Tanner Thomas combined for 13 strikeouts on the mound, and the Utes had 12 hits on the night, led by three hits from Wyler Smith. A second game had been scheduled for April 14 but got rained out.
"It's another Tuesday game that we have to be ready for, especially on the road," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "It's UVU's last home game, so I'm sure their players and fan base will be excited for that."
Utah went 1-2 last week in a three-game series against 13th-ranked USC, dropping the first two games before winning game three in dramatic fashion, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth before Biss Larsen hit a three-run home run in the 10th.
With Sunday's win over USC, the Utes have seven Pac-12 wins, which is tied for the most they have had in league play since joining the conference in 2012.
Utah Valley is 15-29 on the season and 11-10 in the WAC. The Wolverines recently won two out of three over New Mexico State, but have dropped nine of their last 12 games.
The Utes (15-27, 7-14 in the Pac-12) rank second in the Pac-12 in stolen bases with 59, and is second in the conference in batters hit by pitch (61). Kody Davis ranks second in the Pac-12 in on-base percentage (.457) and is fifth in the NCAA in times hit by pitch (19). Davis and Dallas Carroll are tied for sixth in the league with 13 stolen bases. Dalton Carroll is tied for eighth in the Pac-12 in innings pitched (72 2/3) while Brock Duke is tied for ninth in saves (4). Catcher AJ Young has caught 16 runners stealing, which is third in the Pac-12.
The Utes return to Pac-12 play this weekend against Oregon State, which is ranked 22nd in the latest D1Baseball.com poll. Utah has three Pac-12 series remaining this season.
"Hopefully we'll continue to swing the bats as well as we have over the last couple of weeks," Kinneberg said. "We need to shore up on our pitching a little bit. It's getting better, but that's an area that we hope we can continue to get better. We need to stay healthy and finish out the last ball games strong."
