SALT LAKE CITY - Utah pitcher Bret Helton was selected on the second day of the 2015 MLB Draft on Tuesday. Helton was selected in the ninth round, going as the 277th overall selection to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Helton is the seventh player to be drafted in the first 10 rounds during the Bill Kinneberg era, joining C.J. Helton went 2-8 this season with a 5.72 ERA and 48 strikeouts in both a starting and relief role on the mound. He earned wins over sixth-ranked Arizona State and Sacramento State. Helton pitched six scoreless innings over two games against No. 13 USC. He had a season-high nine strikeouts at Nicholls State. Helton also had strong outings against No. 22 Oregon State, Oregon and Kansas State.
During Helton's three years at Utah, Helton went 4-12 with one save. He had a 5.68 ERA and 91 strikeouts, making 39 appearances with 18 starts. Recruited as a two-way player, Helton also spent time at designated hitter and in the outfield for the Utes. He is also a two-time Academic All-Pac-12 selection, earning second-team honors this past season.
