ST. LOUIS - The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) has selected Utah sophomore forward Jakob Poeltl as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 24. The USBWA's weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
Poeltl, a 7-0 sophomore Vienna, Austria, averaged 21.5 points on 60 percent shooting (15-25) from the floor and 81 percent at the foul line (13-16), 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists while recording only one turnover in Utah's sweep through Washington State and Washington last week.
In 23 minutes of action in Thursday's 92-71 win over the Cougars, Poeltl went 7-of-11 from the field en route to 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Against the first-place Huskies on Sunday, Poeltl recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 29 points and 10 rebounds along with four assists and a 13-of-16 effort from the free throw line to lead the Utes to an 80-75 overtime victory.
As the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week, Poeltl was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. This is the seventh season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week.
Poeltl becomes the first Pac-12 to receive the award since Dec. 2012 (Shabazz Muhammad, UCLA) and is just the fourth Pac-12 player to earn the award since its creation in 2009. He becomes the first Utah player to earn the honor.
Poeltl's national honor is Utah's first since Jordan Loveridge was tabbed the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week back on Dec. 16, 2013. Loveridge was a sophomore at the time.
