SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Utah softball team was selected to finish the 2016 conference campaign in fifth place as voted on by the Pac-12 head coaches.
Following a 36-19 record and an at-large berth into the 2015 NCAA Championship Tournament, the Utes were recently tabbed No. 23 in the nation in the 2016 ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Preseason Poll.
Reigning Pac-12 Champion and Women's College World Series participant Oregon was picked to win the Pac-12, receiving eight of the nine first-place votes. UCLA, also a Women's College World Series participant in 2015, was selected second in the poll after receiving the remaining first-place vote.
Arizona earned 49 votes, two fewer than UCLA, and was slotted third while Washington was tabbed fourth. The Utes were picked fifth, followed by California, Arizona State, Oregon State and Stanford. Last season, the Pac-12 sent seven teams to the NCAA Tournament.
The Pac-12's 2015 Coach of the Year Amy Hogue is entering her ninth season at the helm of the Ute softball program. She welcomes back a squad that features seven players that receieved postseason recognition from the Conference of Champions, including NFCA All-America Hannah Flippen and all-region selections Katie Donovan and Kristen Stewart.
In addition to a difficult Pac-12 slate, the Utes open with 24-straight contests on the road. During that time, they will take on five nationally-ranked programs, including the opener against No. 24 Notre Dame at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 12
