SALT LAKE CITY - With just two weeks before opening day, UtahUtes.com will preview the upcoming 2016 season with a breakdown of Utah's roster.
This is the first of a four-part series on Utah's student-athletes at each position, which will run through Tuesday, Feb. 2.
PITCHERS
Utah will have sophomore Katie Donovan back in the circle for her second season. As a freshman, Donovan posted a 16-8 record and recorded four shutouts in 25 starts on her way to earning All-NFCA and All-Pac-12 honors. She finished third in the Pac-12 with a 2.66 earned run average and 154 strikeouts.
Opponents batted just .224 against her, third lowest in the Pac-12 and her seven saves placed her third in the nation. Donovan was one batter away from a perfect game in just her second tournament as a freshman. She notched her first no hitter in the shutout against Nevada.
"Katie wants to lead her team to big places," Hogue stated. "Whether it's in a game, at practice, in the weight room or in the class room, she works extremely hard and has the will to succeed. She is an amazing competitor and we're blessed to have her on our team."
Sophomore Miranda Viramontes was another All-Pac-12 selection for Utah. She finished with a 3.20 ERA, fifth-best in the Pac-12, and made 24 starts.
Another hurler at Hogue's disposal is junior Sammy Cordova. She earned the start and victory over Longwood in the NCAA Tournament, allowing only two hits in four innings and striking out a season-high four batters.
The Utes also have senior Kayce Nieto who appeared in 12 games and notched two saves.
"Miranda is our hardest thrower," Hogue said. "Also, she probably has the heaviest down ball that I've ever coached. Kayce and Sammy are slated for similar roles to last season. Each inning they throw is critical to our opportunities to extend our season into June this year."
Utah also added its pitcher for the future with Hailey Hilburn. Hilburn collected 53 wins inside the circle with a career earned run average of 1.67 and tallied 428 strikeouts in 510 innings while earning all-state honors in California.
"Hailey is similar to Miranda because she throws hard and keeps the ball down. Opportunities will present themselves to her early on and we are hoping she can find a way into our pitching rotation right away as a freshman," Hogue said.
