SALT LAKE CITY - In an exhilarating contest at Ute Field, RV/No. 24 Utah Soccer played No. 4/4 USC to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Thursday evening. Max Flom struck in the 73rd minute to give the Utes a lead but USC canceled out the sophomore's strike.
"This was one of our best performances this season,' Flom said. "I think we have a good chemistry right now and everyone is getting in the mix."
"We did a lot of good things tonight," head coach Rich Manning said. "Our team continues to improve and grow. I really loved to see our team compete and play with confidence against a quality opponent like USC. We scored a fantastic goal and stuck together when the momentum shifted the other way. The crowd was fantastic tonight and I hope people come out to watch another great match on Sunday versus UCLA."
Utah took it to the Trojans from the onset, with Hailey Skolmoski forcing a save from Sammy Jo Prudhomme. Skolmoski saw another chance go high before Taylor Slattery missed wide in the 14th minute. Katie Rogers had a header cleared off the line by a USC defender after Utah's first corner of the match in the 17th minute.
Ute goalkeeper July Mathias was only called into action once during the first stanza, making a save on Alex Anthony in the 42nd minute. Aleea Gwerder had Utah's final chance of the half after making a lung busting run from the back and firing over the bar.
In the second half, Mathias was tested immediately and stopped Morgan Andrews. Utah did not register a chance until the 66th minute when Holly Daugirda put one in Prudhomme's path. Skolmoski was denied one minute later when her header from a corner was also held.
The Utes took the lead when Flom fired a shot into the left corner of the goal from about 20 yards out. It was just the eighth goal allowed this season by the Trojans in 17 contests.
USC amped up the pressure and after Mathias denied Kayla Mills, substitute Taylor McMorrow notched her second goal of the year to tie the score just five minutes later.
The action was frantic in the final stages as Daugirda put one on frame and Mathias was quick to react on an Andrews header.
In the overtime sessions, Skolmoski and Flom had tries on goal but Daugirda had Utah's best chance in the 106th minute. Mathias maintained her strong status at the other end of the pitch, stopping four Trojan tries to preserve the tie.
Utah is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it welcomes No. 9 UCLA for Senior Day. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.Â
