SALT LAKE CITY - Utah head baseball coach
Bill Kinneberg has announced the signing of nine athletes to National Letters of Intent. The signees will join the Utes for the 2018 season.
Â
Five signees are from California: Ian MacIver (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS), Ashton Goddard (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS), Matt Richardson (San Diego, Calif./Helix HS), Kyle Robeniol (Alta Loma, Calif./Orange Coast College), and Austin Moore (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Coast College). Chris Rowan and Hunter Hugely are from Utah, attending Cottonwood High School. Brett Brocoff is from Las Vegas (Desert Oasis HS) while Isaac Deveaux (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team.
Â
Five of the nine signees are pitchers, including two junior college transfers.
Â
"We felt that we would need some help on the pitching side, because the core of our pitching staff will probably be gone next year," Utah head coach
Bill Kinneberg said. "We signed two junior college players who we feel will be able to come in and compete right away and solidify our staff. The three high school arms are quality guys who we also feel will be in the mix and be able to help us next year.
Â
"Utah product Chris Rowan is a good quality athlete," Kinneberg continued. "Catcher is his primary position but he is a good enough athlete he might be able to move to first base or even the outfield if we need it. He has a chance to be a quality hitter for us. Another Utah product, Hunter Hugely, has a chance to play first or third and put up good numbers offensively. Matt Richardson is a very good baseball player and defensive shortstop. Isaac Deveaux is a tremendous athlete from Montreal who has played on the Canadian National Team for years. He has a lot of tools and has a chance to be an impact guy right off the bat."
