Â
BOULDER, Colo. - No. 23 Utah Soccer (11-3-5, 6-1-4) closed its regular season with a 1-1 double-overtime draw at No. 22 Colorado (14-5-1, 8-2-1) this evening.
Hailey Skolmoski's 13
th goal of the season pulled the Utes level in the 78
th minute for the final result before the NCAA Tournament.
Â
"It means the world to everyone to get back," Skolmoski said. "Since we started last spring we've been pushing ourselves to new levels. To get another game for our seniors is a great feeling. We had a great regular season but we still have a lot to prove and a lot of work to do. I'm excited to see what we can do."
Â
Skolmoski already entered the game with the Pac-12 lead in goals and with the tally today, moved to fourth place on the Utah single-season scoring charts.
Â
"I think we are playing good soccer at the right time of year," Skolmoski said. "We picked it up in the second half and when we can keep the ball and make opportunities, I've just been the lucky one."
Â
"The team picked it up when we fell behind," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We did not come out with the energy and focus we needed at the beginning of the game and we had a hard time breaking down their defense.
Â
Once they scored, the energy activated our play.
Mikayla Elmer made some things happen when she came in and we were able to adjust and be aggressive going for the win. We almost got that result in the overtime."
Â
Colorado blasted away at the Utah defense with
July Mathias called into action a few times in the first half, stopping Danica Evans, Stephanie Zuniga and Emily Bruder. Meanwhile, Utah's best tries were blocked as
Ella Ballstaedt and
Max Flom were closed down by CU defenders.
Â
In the second half, the Utes started to test Colorado keeper Jalen Tompkins with
Ireland Dunn and
Mikayla Elmer forcing a pair of saves.   Â
Â
Colorado gained the upper hand in the 63
rd minute with their first shot on goal in the second half. Joss Orejel supplied Evans for her 10
th of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Â
Skolmoski sprung into action with a shot that was blocked and then an attempt that was saved by Tompkins. Eventually, Aleea Gwerder played a lovely cross that was met by
Taylor Slattery. The senior deftly played in Skolmoski who slipped it past Tompkins for the equalizer.
                                  Â
In the final 10 minutes of regulation, both teams had a pair of chances to end the match. Mathis denied Sarah Kinzner and Taylor Kornieck while Slattery fired wide and Skolmoski was stopped for Utah.
Â
In the overtime,
Eden Jacobsen went wide from a corner kick and
Natalee Wells would then hit the crossbar. Meanwhile, Mathias continued her outstanding play with stops on Bruder and Kornieck.
Â
Utah had the only chances in the second stanza of extra time, with
Natalie Vukic firing one right at Tompkins before the CU keeper also held a shot from Slattery.  Â
Â
Utah will now wait to see when and where they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT on NCAA.com
