SALT LAKE CITY - With just two weeks before opening day, UtahUtes.com will preview the upcoming 2016 season with a breakdown of Utah's roster.
This is the first of a four-part series on Utah's student-athletes at each position, which will run through Tuesday, Feb. 2.
OUTFIELDERS
Right fielder Heather Bowen is the only returnee in the outfield after an impressive freshman season. The Las Vegas native was named All-Pac-12 after starting 43 games, hitting .288 and slugging .407 for the Utes.
"Heather was our best hitter in the second half of the season," Hogue stated. "She had a solid postseason for us after settling in to her role. She has a beautiful swing and is poised for a breakout season for us."
The Utes have added seven players to their roster for the 2016 season. Two outfielders, transfer Delilah Pacheco and true freshman Ally Dickman, seem to be in the lead for the available spots.
"Delilah is adjusting to her new position with relative ease because of her athleticism," Hogue said. "D is a table setter that will find her way on the bases a lot by working the count and putting the ball in play on the ground. She is selective and quick which adds up to an ideal leadoff hitter. Ally has earned a spot in our lineup because of her offense. She was one of our top hitters in the fall and she just seems to get better every day."
Dickman recorded a .390 average and was an all-league selection as well as the team MVP her senior season at Capistrano Valley High School in California.
Pacheco was a NFCA and NJCAA All-American, capturing the Marucci Elite Hitter Award this past season at Blinn College. Over two seasons, she batted .391 with 69 stolen bases and maintained a .438 on-base percentage and a .433 slugging percentage.
Another option could be found in Kay Kay Fronda or Aubrey Peterson. Fronda was an All-American at Palomar College, batting .445 over two seasons with 13 home runs and 73 runs batted in. Peterson was a four-time All-Wesco honoree and an All-Area selection at Cascade High School in Washington.
"Kay Kay is competing for a starting spot and is one of our top 3 outfielders defensively," Hogue said. "She is very strong and brings a nice option for us as a power hitting lefty. Aubrey will get opportunities to swing a bat for us and is one of our fastest players on the team. We expect she will also be used as a pinch runner in late innings to help us get across that winning run."
