SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (11-0) extended their winning streak on Saturday against the 71st ranked South Alabama Jaguars (7-3), 6-1. This caps off an undefeated weekend at home for the Utes, as they look forward hosting BYU at the Eccles Tennis Center next Saturday.
"It was a very good team win today," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We started off much better in doubles and set the tone for the rest of the match. South Alabama is a very good team, so I'm very happy with the win."
The sophomore team of Weverink/Sierra secured the first match of the day at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Cowley and Swiggart cliched the doubles point for the Utes in a thrilling set at the No. 1 spot, 7-6(1). Cowley and Swiggart improved to an impressive 7-1 mark in doubles this season.
Senior Matt Cowley put the Utes up 2-0 after a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tim Srkala at the No. 1 singles position. Freshman David Micevski improved his undefeated singles record to 6-0 by cruising past Pierre Noyon at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Utah clinched the match following sophomore Santiago Sierra's 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 6 sport against Gerhard Gruindelingh. Dan Little and Jamey Swiggart also netted wins for the Utes, while Egbert Weverink fell at the No. 4 position to make the final score 6-1.
Next week, Utah will host rival BYU at the Eccles Tennis Center, on Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m. FREE PIZZA will be served at the match.
