Salt Lake City - Utah Softball (8-3) takes a five-game winning streak to Palm Springs this weekend for the 2016 Mary Nutter Classic. The event will be held at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
The Mary Nutter Classic is the nation's largest and most prestigious preseason college softball tournament, featuring 48 top Division I teams. Every game will be available live and via replay exclusively on FloSoftball.com via a FloPRO subscription.
ON DECK
The Utes will play six games over four days, starting with a match-up against No. 12 Oklahoma on Thursday at 3 p.m. PT. Utah follows that with a game against Cal State Fullerton later that evening.
Utah will play Long Beach State on Friday at 6 p.m. PT and then another doubleheader on Saturday against No. 1 Florida (9:30 a.m. PT) and CSUN (3 p.m. PT). The Utes close the tournament against New Mexico State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. PT
LAST TIME OUT
- Utah won all five of its games last weekend at the DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes earned wins over Robert Morris, San Jose State, UC Davis, Boise State and Hawai'i.
- Offensively, Utah batted .352 and slugged eight home runs while averaging 8.4 runs a contest. Third baseman Kristen Stewart hit .583 with five runs scored and five batted in.
- Second baseman Hannah Flippen hit .500 while mashing three home runs and racking up a 1.063 slugging percentage. - Three other Utes, Heather Bowen, Anissa Urtez and Delilah Pacheco, picked up five hits and scored five runs, while Bowen also led the squad with eight RBI.
- Defensively, Katie Donovan went 3-0 while Miranda Viramontes and Hailey Hilburn also recorded victories. Donovan also notched her first save of the season and struck out 15 batters in 12 innings.
- The Utes did not allow an earned run during the entire tournament, a span of 29.0 innings. Utah currently ranks third in the nation with a 0.53 team ERA. Overall, Utah has out-scored its opposition this season, 63-7.
HOT START STATS
Utah has started off aggressively this season, out-scoring their foes 10-1 in the first inning and 44-0 over the second, third and fourth innings combined.
Last year the team went 16-5 when leading after the first inning and those early leads have helped the team hold on for late victories. These last two years, Utah is 37-3 when leading after four innings, 36-2 when leading after five innings and 30-1 when leading after six innings.
PRODUCTION PAYING OFF
Last season, Utah went 30-5 when scoring three runs or more and this year, the team is 8-0 when it passes the threshold.
Over the last two seasons, Utah is 37-2 when they pick up more hits than their opponent and 23-5 when they hit at least one home run.
CAPITALIZING ON MISTAKES
Utah is 7-0 this season when their opponent makes two or more errors. Over the last two seasons, the team is 22-5 when the other team makes a pair of mistakes in the field
ROAD WARRIORS
Utah recorded its best record away from home since joining the Pac-12 last season, going 13-9 in true road contests. Utah is now 24-7 over the last two years in neutral-site games.
The 13 wins in true road games were the most for Utah since collecting 17 road victories in 2007, while the combined 27 wins away from home were the most since recording 29 victories in 2000.
Utah tallied a .710 winning percentage in games away from home in 2015, which ranks as the team's best winning percentage since going 39-6 (.866) away from home more than 21 years ago back in 1994.
UTAH VS. NON-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Utah recorded its second-best start over the first 23 games of play in the past 10 seasons with a 17-6 mark in 2015. So far this season, the team is 8-3 and trying to surpass last year's record.
UP NEXT
Utah takes the week off before a Spring Break trip to Florida. The Utes will play a doubleheader in Tampa against USF on Mar. 9 before having a day off to travel to Orlando. There, the Utes will compete in the UCF Spring Fling against the host Golden Knights, Indiana State, Florida Gulf Coast and Purdue.
