ON DECK
Utah is home for the first time this season when it welcomes local rival BYU and in-state foe Southern Utah to Dumke Family Softball Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday.
For the home opener tomorrow, there will be giveaways for all fans in attendance, including free hot chocolate, magnets and t-shirts.

UTAH NOTES
- Utah has won 13 of its last 18 contests after a 4-3 weekend in the state of Florida. The Utes knocked off Purdue twice, as well as Indiana State and Florida Gulf Coast. The Utes dropped a 4-3 contest at No. 25 UCF.
- Offensively, Utah batted .335 in its wins at UCF. Anissa Urtez hit .385 and paced the Utes with five runs batted in while Hannah Flippen hit .435 and amassed a .609 slugging percentage. The junior leads the team with five home runs this season.
- At the Mary Nutter Classic, Kristen Stewart and Kay Kay Fronda tied for the team lead with seven RBI apiece. Fronda hit a pair of homers and slugged 1.154 while Stewart batted .538
- In the circle, Katie Donovan went 2-2 and struck out 23 batters in 22.0 innings this past week. She matched her career-high with eight strikeouts in a win over Purdue.
- Her counterpart, Miranda Viramontes, was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA. The sophomore also set a career-high for K's when she whiffed six Boilermakers in Utah's second win over Purdue this past weekend.
- The Utes did not allow an earned run during the entire DeMarini Desert Classic, a span of 29.0 innings. Utah currently ranks 12 in the nation in team ERA and leads the Pac-12. Overall, Utah has out-scored its opposition this season, 120-48.
DESERET DUEL BACKGROUND
In 2007, the University of Utah, BYU and Deseret First Credit Union partnered to create the Deseret First Duel, a celebration of one of the nation's oldest and most spirited college rivalries.
The university that wins the Deseret First Duel each year has its name permanently engraved on large granite monuments located at both schools and holds bragging rights for the following year and beyond.
BYU and Utah compete against each other in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, women's volleyball, and men's and women's swimming.
Points are awarded to the school that wins each game, meet, or match. A team trophy is also presented to the winner in each sport. Utah claimed the title in 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2015. This year, BYU currently leads the Utes, 15-14.
HOT START STATS
Utah has started off aggressively this season, out-scoring their foes 17-7 in the first inning and 77-13 over the second, third and fourth innings combined.
Last year the team went 16-5 when leading after the first inning and those early leads have helped the team hold on for late victories. These last two years, Utah is 45-4 when leading after four innings, 44-2 when leading after five innings and 38-1 when leading after six innings.

Last season, Utah went 30-5 when scoring three runs or more and this year, the team is 16-1 when it passes the threshold.
Over the last two seasons, Utah is 43-2 when they pick up more hits than their opponent and 28-6 when they hit at least one home run.
