SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's tennis team was defeated at the Eccles Tennis Center by the #41 Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the way we competed both days. I think we showed that we can play with some of the best programs in the country but both days we missed some opportunities." Said head coach Roeland Brateanu.
Senior Matt Cowley and freshman Dan Little opened up the day with a 6-3 win over Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz.
The point was left to be cinched at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore's Freddie McGeehan and Egbert Weverink were down 5-2 but were able to fight back and force the match into a tiebreak. They fell short and lost to Nolan Paige and David Wilcyznski 7-6 (7-5).
Stanford headed into singles play with a 1-0 lead.
#7 Tom Fawcett defeated Cowley 6-4, 6-2 to give the Cardinal another point but the lead was cut to 2-1 after Little claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kumar.
McGeehan was defeated 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot and Stanford was one point away from clinching the match.
David Micevski cut into the lead and forced the match to continue with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Wilczynski.
Weverink dropped the first set 6-1 but fought back and won the second set 7-5. However, aftertrading games back and forth in the third set Weverink fell short and lost the third set, 5-7, ending on a double fault.
The No. 5 singles match was called early as soon as the match was clinched.
The Utes head out to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies in their next match on Apr. 1.
