INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Jakob Poeltl earned another All-America honor Tuesday when the Associated Press named Poeltl a second-team All-American. By being named to the AP All-America Second Team, Poeltl becomes a consensus second-team All-American selection.
Poeltl, a sophomore out of Vienna, Austria, was named a first-team All-American by the Sporting News, and a second-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and U.S. Basketball Writers Association, earlier this month.
The NCAA recognizes these four All-America teams (AP, NABC, Sporting News and USBWA) to determine consensus All-Americans. A player gets three points for a first-team selection, two for second-team selection and one for third-team selection. The top five totals, plus ties are considered consensus first-team All-Americans, while the next five plus ties make the second team.
Poeltl becomes Utah's second consecutive consensus second-team All-American, following Delon Wright who was tabbed a second-team selection last year. He is the 12th Utah player overall to be named either a consensus first or second-team All-American. He joins Dick Romney (1st), Bill Kinner (1st), Arnie Ferrin (1st & 2nd), Vern Gardner (2nd), Billy McGill (1st & 2nd), Luther Burden (2nd), Danny Vranes (2nd), Keith Van Horn (1st & 2nd), Andre Miller (1st), Andrew Bogut (1st) and Wright as Utah's only consensus All-American selections.
Poeltl led the AP second-team with 41 first-team votes. He was joined by Ben Simmons (LSU), Perry Ellis (Kansas), Kris Dunn (Providence) and Georges Niang (Iowa State). First-team honors went to Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia), Buddy Hield (Oklahoma), Brice Johnson (North Carolina), Tyler Ulis (Kentucky) and Denzel Valentine (Michigan State), while the third-team consisted of Grayson Allen (Duke), Yogi Ferrell (Indiana), Jarrod Uthoff (Iowa), Kay Felder (Oakland) and Jamal Murray (Kentucky).
Along with the aforementioned All-America honors, Poeltl was named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year, an All-Pac-12 first-team honoree and a Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honorable mention selection. He was the USBWA District VII Player of the Year and a NABC District 20 first-team selection.
