Salt Lake City - Utah Softball (12-5) hits the Sunshine State this week for seven games in Tampa and Orlando.
ON DECK
Utah starts its trip with a doubleheader Wednesday at USF starting before heading to UCF's Spring Fling Tournament. The Utes will play the host Golden Knights on Friday, as well as Indiana State (Fri.), Florida Gulf Coast (Sat.) and Purdue (Sat. and Sun.).
UTAH NOTES
- Utah has won nine of its last 11 contests after a 4-2 weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic. The Utes defeated Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, CSUN and New Mexico State but were defeated by No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 1 Florida.
- Offensively, Utah batted .385 in its wins at the Mary Nutter Classic as Kristen Stewart and Kay Kay Fronda tied for the team lead with seven RBI apiece. Fronda hit a pair of homers and slugged 1.154 while Stewart batted .538
- Delilah Pacheco was another standout, batting .421 for the weekend with the team's only hit in the contest against the No. 1 Gators. She also scored five runs and stole a base.
- Second baseman Hannah Flippen hit .500 while mashing three home runs and racking up a 1.063 slugging percentage at the DeMarini Classic in Las Vegas. Flippen leads the team with four home runs this year.
- In the circle, Katie Donovan has won six-straight starts after consecutive 3-0 weekends. In Palm Springs, the sophomore pitched 19 1/3 innings and struck out nine batters.
- Miranda Viramontes suffered two her first two defeats of the season to the No. 12 Sooners and No. UF. The sophomore held the Gators to their fewest runs in a game this year (1) and struck out 14 batters in 15 2/3 innings.
- The Utes did not allow an earned run during the entire DeMarini Desert Classic, a span of 29.0 innings. Utah currently ranks ninth in the nation with a 1.52 team ERA. Overall, Utah has out-scored its opposition this season, 95-26.
URTEZ NAMED COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah shortstop Anissa Urtez was honored on March 1 for her exceptional performances at the Mary Nutter Classic.
Urtez batted .565 in six games, leading the team in hits (13) and runs (6) while racking up a .609 slugging percentage.
This season, the junior leads Utah with a .439 batting average, 15 runs scored and four doubles. She is second on the squad with 12 RBI and leads the team in fielding assists with 46.
HOT START STATS
Utah has started off aggressively this season, out-scoring their foes 13-2 in the first inning and 65-11 over the second, third and fourth innings combined.
Last year the team went 16-5 when leading after the first inning and those early leads have helped the team hold on for late victories. These last two years, Utah is 41-3 when leading after four innings, 40-2 when leading after five innings and 34-1 when leading after six innings.
PRODUCTION PAYING OFF
Last season, Utah went 30-5 when scoring three runs or more and this year, the team is 12-0 when it passes the threshold.
Over the last two seasons, Utah is 41-2 when they pick up more hits than their opponent and 27-5 when they hit at least one home run.
CAPITALIZING ON MISTAKES
Utah is 9-0 this season when their opponent makes two or more errors. Over the last two seasons, the team is 24-5 when the other team makes a pair of mistakes in the field
ROAD WARRIORS
Utah recorded its best record away from home since joining the Pac-12 last season, going 13-9 in true road contests. Utah is now 28-9 over the last two years in neutral-site games.
The 13 wins in true road games were the most for Utah since collecting 17 road victories in 2007, while the combined 27 wins away from home were the most since recording 29 victories in 2000.
Utah tallied a .710 winning percentage in games away from home in 2015, which ranks as the team's best winning percentage since going 39-6 (.866) away from home over two decades ago back in 1994.
UTAH VS. NON-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Utah recorded its second-best start over the first 23 games of play in the past 10 seasons with a 17-6 mark in 2015. So far this season, the team is 12-5 and trying to surpass last year's record.
