SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Arizona, 6-3, to open a three-game series against the Wildcats on Friday evening.
Utah trailed 3-0 before scoring six runs on five hits in the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Jayson Rose pitched seven innings on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with 10 strikeouts, which ties his season high. Dylan Drachler earned the save after pitching the final 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Josh Tedeschi also pitched 2/3 of an inning. Drachler or Tedeschi did not surrender a hit.
Josh Rose led Utah at the plate with a 2-for-3 night, driving in two runs and hitting two doubles off the wall. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. also had two hits. Hunter Simmons drove in two runs.
In the seventh inning, Max Schuman and Cody Scaggari led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Arizona looked to end the threat quickly by recording two outs, including a diving catch to rob AJ Young, before Josh Rose put Utah's first runs on the board with an RBI double off the right field wall. Keirsey followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. Kellen Marruffo was intentionally walked and Dallas Carroll walked to load the bases for Simmons, who drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI single. Carroll scored on a wild pitch to give the Utes a three-run advantage.
Arizona took a quick 1-0 lead to open the game after a leadoff home run. The Wildcats plated an unearned run in the third after a leadoff single and walk plus a throwing error led to a run scoring on a ground out.
Utah struggled early in the game with runners stranded on base. Utah stranded two runners on in the first inning and Josh Rose led off the third with a double but was stranded on third base. Utah put two on with one out in the fifth before Arizona got a pickoff and caught a runner between the bases to end the inning.
Arizona continued to pull ahead in the sixth inning after a leadoff single and subsequent double led to a run to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead before the Utes came back to take the lead in the seventh inning.
Utah and Arizona continue the three-game series on Saturday, April 2, at 4:00 p.m. at Smith's Ballpark. Click here for a free admission coupon.
