SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball earned its second-straight shutout victory with a 4-0 triumph over Weber State this evening.
Katie Donovan picked up win No. 13 this season, going 4 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out five. She did not allow a hit until the third when she wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam with one out.
Offensively, Kristen Stewart reached base three times and scored twice, while Anissa Urtez and Heather Bowen each had multi-hit games and drove in runs.
The Wildcats loaded the bases once more in the fifth as Miranda Viramontes entered the ball game. She induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and worked a perfect 1 2/3 frames. Hailey Hilburn threw a perfect seventh inning to seal the victory.
Utah did what it has done well all season and that is score right out of the gate. Delilah Pacheco used her speed to turn a single into a double and two batters later, Urtez singled to put the Utes in front, 1-0.
The home side doubled its lead in the next inning with Stewart starting things off with a four-pitch walk. Weber State went to second to try and get the Utah third baseman on a Bridget Castro ground ball, but was unsuccessful. After a Shelby Pacheco bunt moved both runners up, Kay Kay Fronda lofted a ball to center for a sacrifice fly.
With two outs in the fifth, Urtez smoked her first pitch to third for a single and Bowen followed with a frozen rope to left center for a RBI double and 3-0 lead.
The scoring was completed in the sixth as Stewart walked again on four pitches. Castro slugged a double over the head of the Weber State right fielder and a pinch-hitting Hilburn followed with a RBI groundout to second base.
The Utes are home this weekend for a three-game series against No. 22 Arizona State. The first contest is Saturday at 4 p.m. and the Utes will be celebrating their 40th anniversary. All of the matchups can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
