SALT LAKE CITY - Tyler Rawson has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Utah next season, head coach Larry Krystkowiak announced on Wednesday. Rawson joins a trio of fall signees in Jayce Johnson, Devon Daniels and Jojo Zamora on the Utes' roster for the 2016-17 season.
"We are extremely excited to have Tyler join our Utah family," Krystkowiak said. "He is a Utah kid and we have known him since his sophomore year of high school. Tyler has developed into an outstanding player and he is an excellent addition to our team. He is a terrific passer, has developed into a very good three-point shooter and he has an outstanding feel for the game. We are proud to call Tyler and his family Utes."
Rawson, who will transfer from nearby Salt Lake Community College, was named a NJCAA third-team All-American this past season after leading the Bruins in points per game (15.9), blocked shots (62) and rebounds per game (8.3). He led the conference in blocks (1.4 per game) and offensive rebounds (2.9 per game).
Rawson, who was named the Region 18 Tournament MVP during the early rounds of the NJCAA Tournament, guided SLCC to a national championship after scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in the title game against Hutchinson JC. He posted double-digit scoring efforts in 37 of the 39 games he played in, which included a season-high 24-point effort against North Idaho College back on Jan 18. He also posted 13 double-doubles on the season for the Bruins.
A 6-10, 225-pound forward out of American Fork, Rawson was a two-time all-state selection at AFHS. He was named the team's MVP, while also being named an all-valley all-star following his junior and senior seasons with the Cavemen.
Rawson is the son of Carol and Ray Rawson. He has four siblings: David, Kayla, Adam and Blake.
