SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball used some pitching from Miranda Viramontes and Katie Donovan to pick up a 3-1 win over No. 22 Arizona State and clinch the series this evening.
Viramontes earned the start and shut the Sun Devils down over five innings to improve to 7-3 on the season. When she ran into trouble, Donovan entered in the sixth and picked up the save by striking out three of the final five batters.
ASU threatened to score in the second when it put the first two runners on base. However, Bridget Castro snagged a line drive and alertly stepped on first to get a double play.
Utah broke through in the second when Heather Bowen worked a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner Sammy Cordova. A grounder to the right side allowed Cordova to get to third and she scored when Kristen Stewart slapped a single through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
Utah doubled its lead when Kay Kay Fronda started the third with a solo homer that avoided the foul pole in left. It was the junior's fourth round-tripper this season and she is now 5-for-6 over the last two games.
The final run for the Utes came across in the fourth. Bowen notched a second leadoff walk and moved up on a Stewart ground out. Castro followed with a single up the middle for a 3-0 advantage.
ASU got on the board in the sixth when Sashel Palacios singled home a run with one out. With the tying run now on base, Donovan entered and promptly rung up the next two batters.
Tomorrow is Family Night at Dumke Softball Stadium as the Utes and Sun Devils conclude their three-game series at 7 p.m. The game can also be seen nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
