SEATTLE -- No. 10 Washington stifled Utah's offense for the second-straight game, as the Utes fell 8-0.
Utah had a chance to score in the first when Hannah Flippen slapped a one-out double but she was left stranded. The junior reached base all three times tonight with a pair of hits and a walk.
UW put runners on second and third with one out in the following inning but a heads-up play by Kristen Stewart at third the home team off the board. After a force play at home, Donovan induced a pop up to Flippen.
In the third, Kay Kay Fronda reached on an error and Delilah Pacheco drew a walk. After a Flippen single loaded the bases, a double play ended the threat and kept the game scoreless.
Katie Donovan escaped a jam in the third and got her first two strikeouts of the game in the fourth. However, the No. 9 hitter in the order, Dani Braun, came up with a run-scoring single for a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Utah looked to equalize. With one out, Shelby Pacheco singled and Fronda walked. After a strikeout and pitching change, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. UW was forced into another change in the circle but a grounder to third kept the Utes from pulling even.
Morganne Flores smashed for a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame for a 3-0 edge. Washington closed things out in the sixth, getting another run on a bases-loaded, hit-by-pitch and then a walk-off grand slam from Casey Stangel.
Donovan threw five innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits while the Huskies used three different pitchers to shut down the Utes.
Utah and UW will conclude their three-game set tomorrow at noon PT on the Pac-12 Networks.
