BERKELEY, Calif. - Utah Softball suffered an 11-3 loss in its Pac-12 series opener at California this evening. Hannah Flippen smashed her 11th home run of the season and Anissa Urtez had a pair of doubles as the Utes fell to 22-12, 4-3 in conference play.
There did not seem to be any rust on the Utah bats as Flippen smashed home run No. 11 for a 1-0 lead. Consecutive doubles by Urtez and Heather Bowen brought another run across before Cal even came to bat.
The home side got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when the Utes had some uncharacteristic errors led to a Taurie Pogue RBI infield single.
Cal tied the game in the second when Lindsay Rood smacked a lead-off triple and scored on a Danielle Bowers sacrifice.
Utah regained the lead in the fifth as Delilah Pacheco singled up the middle with one out. After Flippen hit into a force, Urtez smashed the first pitch she saw down the left-field line for a double and 3-2 lead.
The momentum was short-lived as Cal picked up three-straight hits to start their half of the fifth, tying the score on a Khala Taylor single. Utah's third error of the game would be critical as the Golden Bears scored two on the play to take their first lead. Another run would score when a double-steal was executed to perfection and Rood came home for a 6-3 advantage.
In the sixth, Katie Donovan was lifted and Cal closed things out. Rood knocked in Taurie Pogue with a single and Jasmin Mejia brought the game to an abrupt halt when she clobbered her first home run of the season, a game-ending grand slam.
Donovan finished with five innings pitched and allowed six earned runs, falling to 11-7 on the season.
The Utes and Golden Bears are back in action tomorrow in the second game of their series at 1 p.m. PT
