SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team travels to Oxford, Mississippi, to face Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on Friday, June 3, at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with radio available on ESPN 700.
Also in the double-elimination regional is Tulane and Boston College, who open on Friday at 3:00 p.m. CT. Games continue in the double-elimination format through Sunday, June 5.
The Utes earned the Pac-12's automatic bid to the championship by winning their first Pac-12 Championship since joining the league in 2011-12. Utah won eight of its 10 Pac-12 series during the season (Oregon, Arizona State, Arizona, UCLA, Washington State, Stanford, California and Washington).
The Utes last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2009 after winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Utah went 2-2 in the Fullerton regional that year, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern. Utah is making its second NCAA appearance since 1960 and its fifth overall (1951, 1959 and 1960).
Utah is one of four Pac-12 teams in the field, with Washington, Arizona and Arizona State earning at-large bids.
The Utes rank fifth in the Pac-12 with a .281 batting average and are second overall in Pac-12 games with a .289 average. Utah is also third in the Pac-12 in on-base percentage (.374) which increases to .384 in Pac-12 games (second overall). Dallas Carroll ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with a .433 on-base percentage and is 11th in slugging percentage (.489). Cody Scaggari is 11th in the league in batting average (.328) while ranking 10th in slugging percentage (.492). DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. is tied for sixth in the league with 11 stolen bases and the Utes are fifth overall as a team with 55 stolen bases. Kody Davis also has 10 steals (tied for eighth). Utah led the Pac-12 in runs scored in league games (184) and RBI in league games (166).
Utah has also been strong on defense with 50 double plays, which is second in the conference.
On the mound, Jayson Rose leads the league with 102 strikeouts and needs one more to break the Utah single-season record. He is holding opponents to a .206 batting average, which ranks sixth in the league. Rose's eight wins is tied for fourth in the league. The Utes are second in the Pac-12 with 14 pickoffs with Josh Lapiana recording a Pac-12-high six picks. Dylan Drachler is tied for fifth in the league with eight saves. Pitchers have allowed just 21 home runs, which is the third-fewest allowed in the Pac-12.
Ole Miss is 43-17 on the year and went 18-12 in SEC play. The Rebels reached the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. The team is ranked seventh in the latest D1Baseball.com poll.
Tulane is 39-19 and 15-7 in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave is ranked 15th in the latest D1Baseball.com poll.
Boston College, one of 10 ACC teams to make the field, went 31-20 overall and finished 13-15 in conference play. The Eagles are also making their first appearance in the tournament since 2009.
