Utes Set to Face San Francisco in Event's Opening Round
HONOLULU – The bracket for the 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic – to be played Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Dec. 22, 23 & 25 in Honolulu – has been set and the Utah men's basketball team will face San Francisco in the event's opening round.
The Utes and Dons will play in game three of Thursday's opening round, with a tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. HT (9 p.m. MT) at Stan Sheriff Center. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
Also appearing on Utah's side of the bracket is tournament host Hawai'i, alongside Illinois State, who will face off in the final contest on Thursday. Winners of Utah/San Francisco and Hawai'i /Illinois State will then face each other in the semifinals on Friday, Dec. 23, at 5 p.m. HT (8 p.m. MT), with that contest scheduled to be televised live on ESPN2.
Teams set to play on the opposite side of the bracket include Tulsa vs. Stephen F. Austin (Thursday, Dec. 22 at 11:30 a.m. HT) and San Diego State vs. Southern Miss (Thursday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. HT).
The tournament's championship game is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Dec. 25, at 3:30 p.m. HT (6:30 p.m. MT) and will be televised on ESPN2.
Utah is just 3-7 all-time against San Francisco, but the two teams have not faced each other since 1998. The Utes won the previous match-up, defeating the Dons 85-68 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which eventually led to a Final Four and National Championship Game appearance.
The Utes are 47-10 overall against former WAC foe, Hawai'i, and 0-1 all-time against Illinois State. Utah's last contest against the Warriors was at the Diamond Head Classic back in 2010. The Utes' only meeting with the Redbirds came back in 2009 in Salt Lake City.
Along with Utah, a total of five participating teams appeared in the 2015-16 postseason, including Hawai'i, SDSU, SFA and Tulsa.
