LOS ANGELES – Utah Soccer put forth a fantastic effort but was defeated by No. 2 UCLA this evening, 2-1.
After falling behind 1-0,
Haylee Cacciacarne volleyed home an
Aleea Gwerder corner three minutes later to bring the Utes even. It was her second goal of the season and third of her career.
"We've been talking about continuing to battle and we showed a lot of heart tonight," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We played aggressively and did a lot of things we wanted to do. I see the team is growing the last couple of weeks in spite of the results and that will pay dividends for us."
Utah had the first chance for either side when
Paola van der Veen sailed a try over the goal in the fifth minute of play. Another chance arrived in the 15
th minute and acted as some foreshadowing as Cacciacarne went wide off a corner kick.
At the other end,
Carly Nelson was called into action twice, stopping Viviana Villacorta and Gabrielle Matulich. The Utah defenders kept her from making a save for the final 20 minutes of the half.
That started to change in the second stanza when Sunny Dunphy tested Nelson two minutes in. The Bruins broke through with Delanie Sheehan's fourth goal of the season in the 54
th minute Her shot from just outside the penalty area beat Nelson to the top left corner.
After Cacciacarne scored for Utah, the Utes kept their tails up as
Hailey Skolmoski was denied by Teagan Micah.
UCLA came close to taking the lead when Hallie Mace put a shot on goal and five minutes later, Mackenzie Cerda clanked one off the post. The Bruins also had a goal waved off after having a player caught offside.
Utah's last chance of the game was a try from Van der Veen that was blocked by a UCLA defender and the Bruins finally snagged the winner in the 80
th minute. Jessie Fleming chipped Nelson from a good distance and the ball snuck under the bar.
Utah returns home next week for a Thursday night contest vs. Arizona. It will be a Blackout with kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be live streamed and can be seen on UtahUtes.com and Pac-12.com.
