• Utah will open the 2017-18 season this Friday, Nov. 10, hosting Prairie View A&M. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
• The Runnin' Utes are coming off a 20-12 campaign from 2016-17, which included an 11-7 record and fourth-place finish in Pac-12 Conference play.
• Utah defeated Montana Tech, 95-45, in its lone exhibition contest of the 2017-18 preseason. Sedrick Barefield and David Collette led the team with 15 points each. Donnie Tillman led the team on the boards with eight rebounds in the contest.
• Utah returns a total of 10 letterwinners from last season's squad, which includes senior forward David Collette, who started 22 of 32 games while averaging 13.6 points and 5.1 rebounds, and tallied a team-best .596 shooting percentage from the field. Other starters returning to the team include junior guard Sedrick Barefield (three starts, 9.0 ppg), senior forward Tyler Rawson (eight starts, 6.0), junior guard Parker Van Dyke (11 starts, 4.6), sophomore forward Jayce Johnson (six starts, 4.0), and senior guard/forward Gabe Bealer (six starts, 3.6).

The Panthers are in its second full season under head coach Byron Smith. Smith led PVAMU to a 13-20 overall record last season, which included a 10-8 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Panthers would go onto finish in a tie for third place in the SWAC, while reaching the quarterfinals of the SWAC Tournament.

Key returners from last season's squad include forward Zachary Hamilton, who scored 15.1 points, pulled down 4.1 rebounds and shot 40.0 percent from three-point range, along with guard Troy Thompson, who tallied 10.2 ppg, 1.9 rpg and a 42.0 three-point shooting percentage.

Overall, four of last season's starters return to the court for the Panthers in 2017-18, which also includes J.D. Wallace (5.2 ppg) and Shay'rone Jett (6.6 ppg).
