The Cougars led by as many as 13 in the first half, up 35-22 following an 8-0 run. Following its second timeout of the period, Utah managed to close out the final three and a half minutes outscoring the Cougars 6-2 and cutting the deficit to just nine points, down 3-28 at the break.
Utah shot 44 percent in the first half, but were just 2-of-12 (.167) from downtown over the first 20 minutes. Meanwhile, BYU tallied a 50 percent effort from downtown, going 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and shooting better than 55 percent overall.
Both teams virtually traded buckets to open the second half, which included both Utah and BYU connecting on a pair of three-pointers each. Utah would get back within five points, down 51-46 following a pair of free throws from
Kolbe Caldwell at the 12:04 mark, but a 12-4 BYU run put the home team back up by 13 with just a little over eight minutes left to play.
Despite the Cougars missing a few free throws down the stretch, Utah would manage to only get back within 10 points before the home team closed out the contest scoring seven of the game's final 12 points.
Tyler Rawson led the way for the Utes with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and a 2-of-6 effort from downtown.

Rawson, who also led the Utes with 10 rebounds, was two assists away from recording a triple-double. He finished with a team-high eight assists on the evening.
Utah's loss snapped a three-game winning streak over the Cougars. BYU now leads the all-time series 130-128.
The Utes will wrap-up non-conference play next week, hosting Northwestern State in a mid-week home contest. Tip-off between the Utes and the Demons is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center.
