SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Runnin' Utes (7-2) picked up an in-state rivalry win, downing the Utah State Aggies (5-6) 77-67 in the inaugural game of the Beehive Classic Saturday evening at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
The Utes opened the contest with a 19-2 run, and despite the Aggies getting back to within four points midway through the second half,
Justin Bibbins and
Tyler Rawson's combined 32 points proved to be too much for the Aggies.
Utah led by as many as 21 points, up 45-24 at the 2:44 mark in the first half, but USU would close out the first period outscoring the Utes 12-2 to get back within 11 points at the break. Utah later pushed its lead back to 15 points with a lay-up from former Aggie,
David Collette, but USU again managed to creep back into the game with a 15-4 run.
Utah's lead dwindled to just 58-54 with 11:42 left to play, but
Sedrick Barefield nailed a three-pointer and Bibbins later followed with five straight points to get the Utes back up by double digits. USU would get back within five points of the Utes at the 2:18 mark, but the Aggies were forced to foul down the stretch and Utah would go 5-for-5 from the charity stripe down the stretch.
Utah shot 51 percent from the field (24-of-47), which included a 45 percent effort from downtown (10-of-22). The Utes just missed three shots from the charity stripe, finishing the evening with an 86 percent effort (19-of-22). Utah's defense limited the Aggies to just a 37 percent effort in the game (22-of-60) and a 35 percent effort from beyond the arc (8-of-23).
The Aggies won the battle of the boards, boasting 35 rebounds to Utah's total of 31 boards on the evening. Utah tallied six blocked shots though, while USU had just one.
The Utes will be back on the road next Saturday, Dec. 16, taking on the BYU Cougars in Provo. Tip-off between the Utes and Cougars is set for 9 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center.
