PALO ALTO, Calif. – Junior
Kyle Kuzma registered his 14
th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Utah Utes (15-8, 6-5) fell to the Stanford Cardinal (12-11, 4-7) in a road contest at Maples Pavilion on Saturday.
Â
Junior
Tyler Rawson came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and junior
David Collette added 12 points for the Utes, but Stanford's Reid Travis led a quartet of Cardinal players scoring in double figures with a game-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field.
Â
Stanford shot 54.5 percent from the field throughout the game, which included going 18-of-28 (.643) in the second half. The Utes notched a 44 percent effort from the field, but were just 13-of-22 (.591) from the free throw line on the afternoon.
Â
"I don't know [that] it was our execution as much as we have some hard-headedness from guys who are going to go beat people by themselves," he said. "We don't have that kind of team; we don't have a star on our team. When we move the basketball and play for each other, some good things happen."
Â
Utah led 23-18 with 7:43 left to play in the first half, but the Cardinal closed out the remainder of the period outscoring the Utes, 14-8, on the way to taking a 32-31 lead into halftime.
Â
Both teams would trade buckets to open the second half before a 6-0 run pushed Stanford's lead to 46-41 with 14:03 left to play. A pair of three-pointers from Rawson got the Utes back to within three points and then just a few moments later, both
Sedrick Barefield and
Parker Van Dyke drained shots from the arc to give Utah a 56-54 lead.
Â
After going up 58-54 on a jumper from Kuzma, Stanford would go on a 16-4 run over the next 5:11 to take a 70-62 lead. The Cardinal would close the final three minutes-plus connecting on seven of its 10 free throw attempts on the way to the six-point victory.
