SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team struggled at the plate in falling to New Mexico State, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon to close out the series.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., led Utah at the plate with a 2-for-4 day.
Hunter Simmons was 1-for-2 with two walks.
On the mound,
Josh Lapiana started and earned the loss after throwing the first two innings.
Tanner Thomas pitched five shutout innings, striking out three with one walk and allowing two hits.
Chase Bauerle struck out three of the six batters he faced while
Dylan Drachler closed out the game for the Utes.
New Mexico State had three-straight two-out extra base hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Utah loaded the bases in the bottom of the first after a hit and two walks, but couldn't push a run across.
New Mexico State loaded the bases in the second and third innings. An error on a ground ball allowed the Aggies third run of the game to score in the third inning.
Josh Rose hit a leadoff double in the fourth inning but he was out on a ground out. In the sixth, NMSU's first baseman made a great play after a leadoff walk that initially looked like it would bounce over him for a hit.
Dallas Carroll hit a hard line drive that the shortstop reached out and snagged in the bottom of the eighth.
Simmons led off the top of the ninth with a bloop single that evaded several fielders just beyond first base. After a deep fly out,
Chandler Anderson singled through the right side to put two on before NMSU's relief pitcher got two strikeouts to end the game.
Utah returns to the field on Wednesday, March 15, at Nevada at 2:00 p.m. MT, before opening Pac-12 play against Washington on Friday, March 17.
