Senior one of 34 student-athletes selected
OKLAHOMA CITY — Utah's Hannah Flippen was selected as a finalist for the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award this afternoon
Last season, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Flippen an All-American and she was also named the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year as well as being tabbed an Academic All-America First Team selection by CoSIDA.
Flippen currently sits second in batting average (.446) and runs batted in (36) among Pac-12 players. She is also third in on-base percentage (.525), fourth in slugging percentage (.782), seventh in runs scored (32) and doubles (9). She has surpassed the 200-hit and 100-RBI plateaus for her career and recently set a new Utah mark for runs scored during a career
Flippen is also a finalist for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball. Thirty of the top NCAA softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected earlier this season.
Prior to the start of this season, Flippen also earned a spot on the US National Team.
USA Softball, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States will announce the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year at the NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball, recognizes the outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female players across the country.
Comprising this year's list of finalists includes 23 seniors, eight juniors, two sophomores and one freshman. The student-athletes selected represent 23 NCAA Division I universities and 11 athletic conferences. Arizona is the most represented university among the finalists, having five athletes making the list while Oregon has two players represented. UCLA is the only other Pac-12 school to have a member among the finalists. Â
The list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists on May 10. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 24, while the winner of the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 30 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award is voted on by coaching representatives of 10 Division I Conferences in the 10 USA Softball Regions, members of the media who consistently cover Division I Softball across the country as well as past winners of the award.
