SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball fans will get their first look at the 2017 squad this Saturday when the Utes hit the Huntsman Center floor for the first time this season in the Red/White scrimmage. First serve for the annual intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled for 2 p.m.
"Saturday will be great for both the players and coaches," said Utah head coach
Beth Launiere. "There is still some competition out there for positions and this will be a good opportunity for the players to work in a live setting."
Utah opened preseason camp with the student-athletes reporting back on Monday, Aug. 7, and the first day of practice beginning last Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Crimson Court. After Tuesday's practice, the Utes began practicing twice a day, with practices in the morning and afternoon.
"Camp has been very productive so far," said Launiere. "We got a lot of work done with the incoming players and they have done a very nice job picking things up quickly. The new group has a very high volleyball IQ and they seem to be getting the system down a more rapid pace.
"We have been keeping jumps and swings down for the returners and I think that has been key to a successful camp for those players. With the returners having already participated in competition with the European Tour, it has been all about managing the returning athletes."
The Utes traveled to Park City earlier this week to continue its preseason instruction, while continuing practices, Utah also took their time in Park City to use as team bonding experience. Following each day of practice and other events such as weight lifting, the squad performed a multitude of different team activities to help build comradery.
The Red/White scrimmage will conclude the two weeks of two-a-days for Utah before beginning game-week preparation on Monday. The No. 23-ranked Utes open the season in the Bluegrass Battle, a four-team tournament, next Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25-26, in Lexington, Ky.
Saturday's scrimmage is free to the public. Following the scrimmage, Ute volleyball players will be in attendance at the annual U Fan Fest, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Fans can participate in interactive games and will have both photo and autograph opportunities with all 18 Utah varsity teams.
