Baseball Begins Fall Practice on Sept. 17

The Utah baseball team begins team fall practice on Sunday, Sept. 17. The players have been participating in individual practices since school began in August.

"Individuals have gone very well," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I think guys are ready to get into team practice and start scrimmaging and playing, particularly the new guys. We have so many new guys, we're all anxious to see them in practice and situations. I am really happy with the way the guys came back from summer ball and summer workouts and they seem to be in good shape. Guys are focused and ready to go.

"By the end of fall practice, we want to know our personnel and want them to know how we are going to play. We want a good evaluation on every player so we can start to build our depth chart."

The Utes have 16 new players on the fall roster.

"We have a large group of new guys, and the next five to six weeks will be a big learning experience, particularly for the freshmen," Kinneberg said. "The quicker we get into it the better we will all be."

Although the Utes lost four players to the MLB draft, Utah returns two-time All-Pac-12 outfielder DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., who hit .327 last year with five triples and finished fourth in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.42). Other returning players who hit over .300 include outfielders Chandler Anderson (.336) and Dominic Foscalina (.322).

Utah will have three seniors on the mound. Two-year starter Josh Lapiana (5.52 ERA, 3-6) returns as well as relievers Tanner Thomas (4-0, 2.91 ERA) and Trenton Stoltz (0-1, 1 SV, 1.80 ERA). Sophomore Jacob Rebar was recently named the top prospect in this past summer's SoCal Collegiate League.

The Utes were recently ranked at No. 90 in the D1Baseball.com Top 100 Programs rankings.
