SEATTLE – No. 24 Utah Soccer (5-3-2, 0-1-1) dropped its first road match in Pac-12 play on Thursday evening, 2-0, at Washington (8-3-0, 1-1-0).
"I thought we played some good soccer tonight," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We moved the ball well and created some good opportunities. Credit to Washington for a couple of good goals and some great defending. We will look to clean up some things as we head to Pullman and we have an opportunity to get better."
Utah had a couple chances in the early going with
Paola van der Veen firing high in the sixth minute.
Natalie Vukic had a try blocked that created a chance for the Huskies, but
Carly Nelson stopped Pascale Dumesnil in the 19
th minute.
Utah's best chance of the half came two minutes later when
Tavia Leachman got on the end of a Van der Veen corner and headed it toward goal. However, the UW keeper was able to secure the ball and keep the match scoreless.
The home side broke through five minutes later as Dumesnil scored her first goal of the season. She beat a defender to a bouncing ball and then another Utah defender stumbled, allowing her to fire on goal.
Utah's leading goal scorer
Hailey Skolmoski had a pair of chances to even the score before halftime but her first try was blocked and her second, a header off a corner kick, was collected by UW's Sarah Shimer.
In the second half, Leachman used her height once again to make things difficult for the UW defense, forcing a save.
Ella Ballstaedt got a glimpse of goal just before the hour mark but Shimer held her off.
Nelson made her second save of the evening when she got her hands to a Rachel Wheeler try. At that point of the game, it was a vital event as Van der Veen came down the pitch and struck the post.
With Utah pressing for the equalizer, Washington collected the ball and countered. Dumesnil crossed a ball from the right and Amanda Perez got to it ahead of a diving Nelson for her second goal of the season and a tally that sealed the match.
Utah remains on the road with a contest at Washington State on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks.
