PROVO - The annual Deseret First Duel ended in a double-overtime draw as No. 21 Utah and BYU finished 1-1 this evening.
Eden Jacobsen scored on the half hour off a lovely thru ball from
Paola van der Veen. It was the junior's second goal of the season and after missing last year's rivalry game with an injury, it was a proud moment for Jacobsen.
"Being a Utah fan my entire life and to score that goal in front of their fans was an amazing feeling but it's pretty bittersweet now because of the end result," Jacobsen stated. "We did a lot of really good things throughout the game and we played with high energy, which is something we continue to try and work on."
"We did a lot of really good things in a tough environment," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We played with tremendous heart and energy and every one of us is disappointed with the result. However, there were a lot of good things we can take from this match moving forward this season."
BYU had the first legitimate chance of the game but Rachel Bingham's shot was right at
Carly Nelson on a bounce. Utah's first shot was a great opportunity in the 22
nd minute when
Haylee Cacciacarne's header smacked off the crossbar from a corner kick.
After Jacobsen's goal, Utah had another chance in the 34
th minute when Van der Veen hammed a line drive right to BYU goalkeeper Hannah Clark
In the first minute of the second half,
Hailey Skolmoski had a chance to double the lead as she got free down the right side. However, her shot went high. The junior would get another try five minutes later, but fired wide.
BYU tied it up in the 56
th minute on Nadia Gomes' first goal of the year. It happened immediately after a foul deep in the Utah end and on a pass back to the keeper, a miscommunication allowed Gomes to sneak in and pip it past Nelson.
The Cougars almost went ahead on the hour but Cameron Tucker's try went right to Nelson. Utah followed with a pair of chances as
Max Flom sent a cross in from the left and
Natalie Vukic was unlucky to push the ball right in to Clark. Five minutes later, the Utes earned a corner and Skolmoski popped her header up as Clark collected.
With under 20 minutes remaining in regulation, Nelson went to ground to hold a try from Bizzy Bowen. A quick outlet released the Utes and Van der Veen had a try blocked out for a corner.
In the 83
rd minute, Van der Veen collected the ball off a throw-in and drove to goal. However, her shot was right into Clark's belly. At the other end, Nelson made her best save of the night to deny Madie Mathews. With time winding down in regulation, Van der Veen's effort went right to Clark's mitts.
In the final seconds, Po had a try blocked, resulting in a corner. Unfortunately for Utah,
Aleea Gwerder's header went straight into Clark's clutches and the game headed to overtime.
Utah looked fresher in the extra periods, creating a handful of chances that could have resulted in the winner. Jacobsen had a shot blocked after a corner kick in the first minute of the first overtime and Van der Veen narrowly missed the bottom right corner on a quick strike. Two minutes later, Gwerder fired in a free kick but once again, Clark was up to the challenge.
The BYU senior goalkeeper had to make one last stand in the final minute of the contest when she denied
Holly Daugirda near the end line.
Utah now travels cross country for a Monday night matchup at No. 11 Duke. The Utes and Blue Devils kick off at 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the ACC Network/ESPN3
