LOS ANGELES – The Utah men's basketball team fell 84-67 to the USC Trojans on the road at the Galen Center on Sunday.
Â
With the loss, Utah drops to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in Pac-12 play. The Trojans improved to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Â
Utah opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers from
Donnie Tillman and
Tyler Rawson, but USC countered with a 10-0 run and later pushed its lead to 24-9 following a 14-0 run. USC, who led 46-22 at the break, finished the first half shooting 9-of-15 from three-point range, while Utah managed to knock down just 3-of-13.
Â
Utah's
Justin Bibbins led the Utes scoring all 19 of his points in the second half, but his efforts were not enough, as the Utes just could not recover from the 20-point deficit. The Utes would eventually cut the deficit back down to just 16 points following a turn-around lay-up from
Jayce Johnson at the 4:15 mark, but USC's three-point efforts proved to be too much.
Â
The Trojans finished the game setting a new season-high from downtown, draining 14-of-29 from beyond the arc. Utah's three-point shooting picked up in the second half as the Utes made 7-of-11 in the period and finished the game netting at least 10 three-pointers for the ninth time this season.
Â
Johnson led the Utes off the bench, finishing the game with 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting and pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Tillman, who made his first start of the season, finished with 10 points and
David Collette chipped in with 11 points.
Â
Utah is back at home this coming week to host both Washington schools. The Utes will take on the Washington Huskies this Thursday, Jan. 18, and will then close out the week facing the Washington State Cougars on Sunday, Jan. 21.
