LAST TIME OUT
Utah snapped a four-game losing streak with a 70-62 win over Washington at the Huntsman Center this past Thursday.
Justin Bibbins scored 20 points and pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds to record his first double-double as a Ute.
Â
Utah's defense yielded just one three-pointer from the Huskies in the first half. It was the first time that the Utes held the opponent to one three-pointer or less in the first half since Missouri went 1-for-13 from the arc back on Nov. 16, 2017. Utah finished the game giving up just two three-pointers to the Huskies overall, which marks a new opponent low on the season (previous mark was four, three times).
Utah won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies, 44 to 38 on the evening. Prior to this evening, Utah had been out-rebounded in six straight games and nine of the last 10.
Â
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
The Cougars are coming off an 82-73 road loss to Colorado earlier this week. WSU has won just three games in the past 12 contests overall. WSU brings in a 9-9 overall record into the week, which includes a 1-5 mark in Pac-12 play. The Cougars are 0-5 in road games, with two of those losses coming against Pac-12 Conference opponents.
Â
The Cougars opened the regular season winning its first six games, but spans of losses, including a three-game losing streak and a four-game losing streak have doomed WSU to just one game about .500.
Â
Robert Franks leads WSU with 18.2 points per game and he also leads the team on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per contest. Franks also leads the team with 103 field goals made, with 45 of those coming from beyond the arc. Malachi Flynn has tallied a team-high 68 assists and 22 steals on the season. He also has a team-high 50 made three-pointers.
Â
The Cougars are shooting 45 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the charity stripe. WSU averages 75.6 points per game, while giving up 74.2 points to opposing teams. They are being out-rebounded on the season, 37.1 to 35.7 boards per game.
Â
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE COUGARS
Utah has dominated an all-time series that dates back to 1938, having won 21 of the 25 meetings. The Utes have won seven straight and are 8-2 against the Cougars since joining the Pac-12. Utah's last loss to WSU was a 49-46 defeat in Pullman back on Jan. 12, 2014. Utah is 15-1 all-time when facing the Cougars in Salt Lake City, which includes a current 15-game winning streak. WSU's only win over the Utes in Salt Lake City came back in 1946.
Â
UP NEXT
The Utes are back on the road next week and will open a three-game road swing taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils next Thursday, Jan. 25. Tip-off between the Utes and Sun Devils is set for 7:30 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
