Utah Baseball Opens Practice for 2018 Campaign

The Utah baseball team opened its 2018 season this past weekend, traveling to St. George, Utah, to practice on the first weekend of the year.

"Naturally, it was good for our team to be out on grass," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We scrimmaged over 17 innings so our pitchers, hitters and defense got a chance to be on dirt and everyone had a chance to play. All of that was a big plus for us. We had some really good performances and we're looking forward to expanding on that next week. Notable over the weekend were pitchers Tanner Thomas and Kyle Robeniol, who both pitched really well."

The forecast is scheduled to be sunny and warm this weekend and the Utes are planning to scrimmage at home at Ute Field on Guardsman Way.

Utah returns two-time All-Pac-12 outfielder DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., who hit .327 last year with five triples and finished fourth in the Pac-12 in hits per game (1.42). Other returning players who hit over .300 include outfielders Chandler Anderson (.336) and Dominic Foscalina (.322).

Utah will have three seniors on the mound. Two-year starter Josh Lapiana (5.52 ERA, 3-6) returns as well as relievers Thomas (4-0, 2.91 ERA) and Trenton Stoltz (0-1, 1 SV, 1.80 ERA). Sophomore Jacob Rebar was named the top prospect in this past summer's SoCal Collegiate League.

The Utes have 14 new players on the roster.
