STANFORD, Calif. – Utah Soccer saw the end to its four-game winning streak this evening with a 2-0 loss at No. 1 Stanford.
After blanking its last four opponents, Utah allowed a goal either side of halftime in a setback to the defending national champions. The Cardinal extended its unbeaten streak to 36 games and has outscored its opponents during that span, 115-13
Sophia Smith got Stanford on the board in the 27
th minute. She picked the ball up 40 yards from goal and was able to weave through some Utah defenders before finishing inside the far post to the bottom right corner.
"I am proud of the team's effort tonight," head coach
Rich Manning said. "Stanford put us under a lot of pressure and we stayed strong. I also thought we defended well and Carly had another awesome night in goal."
Carly Nelson showed why she is one of the top goalkeepers in the conference by stopping a Jordan DIBiasi penalty kick to start the second half. After three saves in the first stanza, the junior finished the evening with six stops.
Stanford got its second goal just past the hour mark when DiBiasi split a pair of defenders with a pass and Beattie Goad finished to the bottom left corner.
Utah was unable to register a shot against the Cardinal until the final 10 minutes of regulation as
Holly Daugirda's attempt was blocked and
Paola van der Veen missed wide
"We learned some important things about ourselves tonight and we will take that moving forward to Cal on Sunday," Manning added.
