SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team has finished its fall season and head coach
Bill Kinneberg feels good about the progress his team made.
Â
The team has 18 newcomers as well as welcoming back several players from injury from last season, so much of the fall was spent getting everyone ready for 2019.
Â
"There are a few guys coming back from injury that are all getting very close and they've bounced back very nicely," Kinneberg said. "That was number one for us. Along with that and having so many new guys coming in, we made some big improvements. We now switch back to individuals and work on refinement as well as getting the players faster and stronger. Those will be the points of emphasis at this point."
Â
Along with practicing all fall, the Utes had two games this past week on the road at Utah Valley and Dixie State. Playing against other teams is a valuable experience for a group with so many new players.
Â
"This fall it was very important to get all of the new guy's feet wet a little bit by seeing a different team, going to a different park and traveling a little bit," Kinneberg said. "I thought that was accomplished and we did a nice job on that. They got some at bats and innings pitched and now they're seeing where they're fitting in and what the competition is like."
Â
Through practicing all fall and having 12 intersquad scrimmages, the team got better and is getting close to being ready for action in February.
Â
"By the end of the fall you hope you're ready to play," Kinneberg said. "There are still some things we need to put in offensively and defensively and we aren't quite ready to play a game yet, but we're close. That's always my objective in the fall is to get a feel for the new guys and where the returning guys are as far as their maturation and their chances of getting better. After the fall, I think we're close on all of that."
Â
The Utes 2019 season will begin Friday, February 15 in San Marcos, Texas against Texas State. Utah will have 25 home games in all this season beginning with Niagara on March 8.
